Worship

Worship

In our previous devotion, we saw where Jesus brought life and Living Water to the Samaritan woman at the well. In their discussion, he told her, “God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). Read John 4:1-26 to refresh on the entire account.

Have you thought about worship? Do you worship? How do you worship? Is it in spirit/Spirit AND in truth? What does that even mean?

Our place of worship isn’t important, but the place it comes from matters-your heart (spirit). He wants it to be genuine, unlike the Pharisees who only did it for appearances and being religious. We also must worship by being indwelled by the Holy Spirit (worshipping in Spirit), when we’ve placed our faith in Christ. (“Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you-guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us” – 2 Timothy 1:14.)

The Holy Spirit stirs, awakens, leads, and opens our eyes. Let us “put no confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:3). He doesn’t want fake worshippers (Isaiah 29:13).

And, worshipping while in spirit must be done “in truth”, meaning not what feels good, sounds good, but in light of who God is, God’s character, and centered on what we know to be true. Never worship mindlessly or ignorantly. We also can’t do one without the other-spirit or truth. Remember those religions leaders? We must engage our hearts, our affections, and all of our being in truth. However that looks for you will probably be different than someone else. Just be genuine.

Questions for today:

What is one thing God is speaking to you from today’s scriptures?

Are you willing to ask God to examine your heart of worship?

Verse to continue to put to memory: “What, the, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31
